Also basing it off rankings would allow teams to use their cap how they want...with it based off slots...you have no control on spending your money

Also if people want to use real life salaries...you could cap the bad contracts so they are draftable...aka Cano contract wouldn't be his real life contract but the max contract that was decided on...for example...19M for 5 years if that is the max Just throwing out ideas on how you could do a hybrid system that best fits the league

I like Whitey's structure better than mine. Although I think that for a good chunk of them giving a 5-year 19M contract or a 5 year contract to your first 5 picks is going to make your cap situation tight. I don't think that if guys are really thinking about their contract strategy that it'll be 5 years before a decent FA pool is available. 3, maybe though.
That said, having to decide if you're giving your guy a 5-year deal within 24 hours means you do have to consider what's going to be left down the road and whether or not you want to spend a 5-year deal on one player when you could lock up a cheaper player a couple rounds later that is similar and/or younger. That part adds an interesting dynamic to the draft process and contract decision, IMO.

I think we should be able to wait until after the draft to assign contracts, so you can look at the whole picture and see what you have to work with

One idea is to limit how many 5 year contracts a team can issue on players they select in the initial draft only, same with 4 year and 3 year and even 2 year contracts if you want. Example a team is limited to contracts at particular lengths for the initial draft as follows 5 year contracts limited to 3 players 4 year contracts limited to 4 players 3 year contracts limited to 5 players 2 year contracts limited to 6 players 1 year contracts for the remaining 7 players Just an idea I would not be opposed to something like this for sure.

I like the idea of using the set salaries for each round. It allows for the owner make the choice on how much he is willing to pay for his player. And doesn't already make you over pay for someone.

Just looking at some values....obviously Trout is the #1 fantasy player...he will cost some team 19M...but on the other end...the #30 pick I believe is 15M...I looked at some rankings and it brought names like Jose Fernandez, Strasburg, Pedroia around the #30 pick...those guys for 15M is not a good deal...all the auction values I see have Trout valued more than any other player and by far....why I brought the idea of basing it off the player and where they are ranked...aka Trout is worth 25M...Miggy worth 23M etc...it would be pretty simple to come up with this numbers if you know how to use a spreadsheet

I thought we could all use a look at some real numbers. I used Mock Draft Central and played out a 30 team snake draft using the currently proposed salary structure. Check it out here: dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/9874713/EDBL%20Salary%20Structure.xlsxGenerally speaking the salaries look reasonable for the talent. But there are a few theoretical things to consider with this format. We will start with no rookie contract or arb eligible players on the 25 man roster. Whitey's idea on staggering eligible contract years is a good one. We will have to tweak it once we find rookie and arb eligible contracts on the 25 man rosters. I'm not opposed to the proposed salary structure. Some alternative thoughts are three fold: either use Cot's for current contracts and we inherit them when we draft the player, let the free market economy play out and have an auction style draft (which logistically would be tough), or when you pick a team you get their roster, payroll, and farm system. The salary cap and floor move in each year until they are reasonable. I have no problem pitching in to make any of the above happen. I already have most of the data in spreadsheets.

Nice work Collins, judging by the votes it looks like we will use a salary structure based on the draft. I might tweak the numbers slightly but something pretty similar to what's posted above is what we will use.
As far as Whitey's contract years thing goes, I plan on using it for the initial contracts. How ever we will only use it to start the league. You won't have to stick to those rules in the future off-season free agency periods.

What structure will be used?? Maybe just set a minimum number of 1 year deals and max number of 4/5 year deals....that way there doesn't have to be exactly 5 5 year deals 5 4 year deals 5 3 year deals etc etc....just a thought...if a team wants to do all 1 year deals...let em

This is the best structure that has been posted so far and the one I prefer to use.
5 year contracts limited to 3 players 4 year contracts limited to 4 players 3 year contracts limited to 5 players 2 year contracts limited to 6 players 1 year contracts for the remaining 7 players

All those players that are drafted at 500k are going to be max 1 or 2 year deals so all your expensive guys are going to be the 4 and 5 year guys....I think the idea was on the right track but needs to be tweaked a little Based on the current salary structure...7 rounds are where guys are at 500k, 1 round at 600k, 1 round at 700k...all those guys are a max 2 year deal...so there goes 9 of your 13 1/2 year deals without even knowing what players you drafted and at what salaries

This will solve tbraves13 concerns
5 year contracts limited to 3 players 4 year contracts limited to 4 players 3 year contracts limited to 5 players 2 year contracts limited to 6 players 1 year contracts for the remaining players
That way you can have 25 one year contracts if you want, you are just limited on the multiyear deals

Once we get a few years in we can always tweak some more. Well done, Whitey.

As long as there are some 1 and 2 year deals..then the free agency won't be an issue b/c you will have talent coming up every year. That is why I think just max out the 4 and 5 year deals and set a minimum of 1 year deals...could also set a minimum of 2 year deals Here is what I would say...just tweaking your system a little 5 year contracts limited to 3 players 4 year contracts limited to 4 players Minimum of 5 2 year contracts Minimum of 7 1 year contracts That would make at least 12 of your 25 players having either 1 or 2 year deals.
